A little over a year ago, I got a tattoo of the “bee” in LGBT, as designed by Kate Estrop for the Bisexual Resource Center, on the back of my thigh. It’s my first tattoo and I got it the day before I turned 39. On the day of the inking, I described what I wanted to the artist, Candace. She asked me about the colors so I explained that they were the bi flag colors, and the bee represented the “B” in LGBT. She paused and then said, “I’m so psyched that you just told me that. I’m about to ask this woman to be my girlfriend, and she’s the first bisexual woman I’ve ever dated.” She asked me questions about bisexuality while she did the tattoo, and I told her all about the BRC and Tiggy Upland. In the end, I gave her a bee button to give to her new girlfriend.
